At its first nuclear weapon test, "Operation Hurricane", in October 1952 Britain began exhaustive studies of the ignition of fire by nuclear weapons. These nuclear test studies were headed by George Reginald Stanbury, the civil defence thermal ignition expert of the Home Office, and by D. I. Lawson of the Joint Fire Research Organization. This report summarizes the research done.
